Hilary Bates is a CA licensed architect with over 20 years of experience working on solo and collaborative design projects in the Bay Area. 

Hilary received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Yale University and upon graduation moved to Lilongwe, Malawi where she worked as an architect with the United States Peace Corps.  Hilary returned to the United States to attend the University of California at Berkeley where she earned a Masters of Architecture. 

Hilary remained in California and had the privilege to work with many of the foremost Bay Area design talents including Sander Architects, BAMO, BAR Architects and Butler Armsden Architects. 

Hilary Bates Architecture was founded in 1998 and has had as its primary focus the development of high-end residential projects.  Located in San Francisco, California, HBA has significant experience in interior architectural planning, design, materials selection and detailing as well as working with complex projects and high net-worth clients. In 2015, to address issues of sustainability in building, Hilary became a credentialed LEED Green Associate through the US Green Building Council. In 2020, Hilary completed a professional program in Energy Innovation and Emerging Technologies through Stanford University. Hilary has served on the board of the The San Francisco Parks Trust, The Horse Park of Woodside, The Exploratorium Arts and Inquiry Committee and is an active participant in the Peninsula Bridge student mentorship program. In 2021 Hilary was elected to serve on the Town of Woodside’s Architectural and Site Review Board and volunteers on the San Mateo County AIA Committee on the Environment.
